Leigh’s Mean Girls

Ugh. This is awful. Long story short: as our oldest daughter Leigh approaches 30, now married with two children, she’s become more conservative. Not conservative per se, just more conservative.

Her (single, childless) friends can’t abide that.

It’s gotten so bad, that her best friend in the whole world, who she’s been thick as thieves with for over 17 years, is pulling back. Not walking away, but she might as well be. And why?

Because Leigh dared to post on Facebook (where they all keep up with each other, spread as they are, around the country) that she is, indeed, moderating her opinions and she’s tired of hiding them. She didn’t even stake out any extreme position on anything. She merely posted that that’s where she’s at and doesn’t have any problems with anybody, she just wanted them to know because, like I said, she was tired of hiding.

Well that brought the house down. She’s lost a dozen friends, from the sounds of it, and that was bad enough, but losing her best friend only happened this past week, and that’s a tough one.

The poor kid. I don’t even know how to help her except listen and comfort her and let her know that there are friends to be had out there that will not throw away 17 years over a mild, minor departure from a political orthodoxy!

Ugh.
